English Club Chatter

We hope everyone remembers that our next English Club meeting is next week, on Wednesday at 12pm in the coffeehouse. We will be discussing upcoming events and ideas, so come on in and join us for some free coffee. We do understand that many people won't be able to make it, though, so please feel free to express any ideas for activities here on the weblog. We can also use this thread for book and movie suggestions, so we can get a movie night or book discussion going. Hope to see everyone Wednesday!

I don't intend to butt in on your conversation of what you want to do. But just to fuel the fires, here are some movies coming down the pipe that might be of interest (not that there aren't others).

Nov.4 Jar Head (dir. Sam Mendes)
Shop Girl (Steve Martin novel)
Nov. 11 Bee Season (Myla Goldberg novel)
Pride and Prejudice (Austen remake)
Nov. 24 The Libertine (about the poet earl
of Rochester)

Check out movies.com for more upcoming releases. And if you want to roam around for films to screen on campus, look at www.imdb.com.

Shopgirl was a great book, and it's a short read so it's a good one for us busy college students. It's not what one typically expects from Steve Martin; some people might be surprised to see his dramatic side.
As a side note, Steve Martin fans should check out www.SteveMartin.com. In the "World of Steve," there are links to essays he wrote for the NY Times, and his Shouts and Murmurs columns in the New Yorker are hilarious, pure genius.

So, The Libertine is finally being released. Nothing quite like an eccentric Johnny Depp performance.

Jesi (and other Austen fans -- me too), did you know there is a new film of Pride and Prejudice coming out soon? Field trip?

I know. I'll go too (field trip or no). But how can you improve on Colin Firth? Do we really need another P&P? I thought the last one was pretty good, though maybe the Elizabeth might be improved on (I'm not sure Keira Knightley is the one to do it though). Ah well. It'll make for good conversation anyway.

I don't think anyone can beat Colin Firth's performance. I love the A&E version, so I am a little afraid to go to the new P&P and be disappointed. I guess, I'll go, though, if a bunch of us are. Although I really don't want to go on a date with Jesi and Prof Hamlin, so please someone else come too!

I was in the middle of responding, when the whole thing disappeared. I think, when someone removed the other annoying posts. So. I will try again.
It will be interesting to see to what demographic the new P&P is geared. I can't imagine a large percentage of the younger end of the spectrum investing five hour to the A&E version, though it is certainly one of my all-time favorites. In that respect, I can imagine some benefit of an alternative version. While obviously different, The Lord of the Rings films sparked an enourmous resurgence in the readership of the books. Ideally, something similar (though on a smaller scale) will happen with Jane Austen.
As far as Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth performance, I have to say that, considering she is in almost every scene, I still find her to be a compelling presence no matter what criterion I am using when I view the film. I think she and Firth both do an outstanding job of bringing their characters to life against the other broadly stereotypical characters. Which, of course, is the point.
