Yourself, your generation, in song

OK, so I'm leaving at the end of this term, and it's my last chance to get to know you. One regular problem for anyone who teaches, at whatever level, is that you keep getting older while the students (as a whole) remain the same. It's easy to get out of touch. For instance, I've been having a lot of blank responses to my film references lately, so I know I've got to come up with some other examples.

So here's the challenge: tell me who I should know, what I should listen to in music in order to know either YOU or your generation. Of course, these might be quite different, depending on whether you see yourself as representative or not. Either way, though, chime in. And tell me a little about why this song or that band is worth listening to.

Yours, HH

Wow! I'm not quite sure what generation I'd fit in but I don't think I know any two people (young or old)that listen to the same type of music. You're bound to always get some puzzled looks no matter what. The only things I can think of to try is watch MTV2 (if you can stomach it), or if you get some time go on a music site like iTunes and just cruise around. People listen to everything nowadays and you're sure to find something you like.

Well Professor Hamlin you're just going to have to stop watching the 1950s B Alien movies, there are new ones much better than those out there.

Men in Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, The original Star Wars Trilogy, Predator, Predator II, The Fifth Element, etc.

Animation movies:
Shrek, Shrek II, Lilo and Stitch, Lion King (a little trivia based off of Shakespeare), Cars, Happily Never After, etc.

Drama(ish):
Fried Green Tomatoes, Second Hand Lions, Hidalgo, Amistad, Windtalkers, Schindler's List, The Color Purple, etc.

Comedy:
Pirates of the Caribbean, Mouse Hunt, The Birdcage, Liar, Liar, The Adam's Family, The Adam's Family II, The Three Amigos, etc.

Comedy Specials:
Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again, Blue Collar Comedy Tour One More for the Road, Jeff Dunham: Arguing With Myself, etc.

Epic Fantasy:
Lord of the Rings Trilogy, both Star Wars Trilogies, Dragons of Autumn Twighlight (Sept 2007), Eragon (book's better), etc.

Music:
Linkin Park, Pink, Evanescence, All American Rejects, Panic! At the Disco, Aerosmith, Queen, Metallica, Green Day, Nirvana, TLC, Bianca Ryan (13 and sounds like Janis Joplin), etc. Mostly Heavy Metal and it's different branches.

I could go on but somebody else probably wants to respond.

This one time I must post, primarily to congratulate Professor Hamlin on recent fellowships he’s won; but also because I too would like opinion as to what music is good (hot, current, buzz-worthy) in the view of twenty-something college students. I have (unexpected) access to an MP3 download subscription service; and not wanting to remain habitually stuck with early-seventies music, I really would like to hear new realms of sound, that is, find cool artists and intriguing (newer) music genre; not just plain-vanilla Rock ‘n Roll. I want to thank Dion for his recommendation, and so I have already delved into some of the Tori Amos’ “Boys for Pele” album, which is, somewhat surprisingly, available via my new subscription service. Also, congrats to all of the English Club people, past and present, who have helped this organization along. Lastly, the OSU-Mansfield Flick Fest 2007 last night enjoyed an amazing turn-out. There were over a hundred people in attendance. And the organizers of the nascent Film Club at OSU-M should be heartily congratulated; it’s an excellent endeavor that students will enjoy being part of. One last thing, echoing something from last night’s viewing, though not altogether cryptically: “rosebud.” HW

music: Greenday is a must just because they are awesome! I also love the All American Rejects because they are awesome too!

Movies: I love comedies, especially Will Ferrel and Adam Sandler movies. I also like Reese Whitherspoon movies too.

I realize that I am older than you, but are you sure it's the films in the references that elicit the blank stares?

As far as what music might help you understand my generation--well, just avoid Disco. Stick with Led Zepelin, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Genesis (w/Peter Gabriel), Neil Young (Canadian), Tom Waits, and others just like them (not Van's Them though).
