Censorship

This morning, I discovered a rather questionable post on our Story Lines thread. (You can read this post by clicking below or checking it out on Story Lines). My first instinct was to delete it, but I stopped and asked myself how much right I have to censor others on this blog. So I asked everyone in the Writing Center what I should do, but we didn’t really come to any consensus. So Aaron suggested we turn it into a thread of its own as a discussion about censorship and ownership.

There are several questions one needs to address here: First of all, is this blog a public or private forum? Secondly, how do we take responsibility for the words that we write and send out into any forum? Does this post add to the story, or does it have artistic merit? Who are we to judge artistic merit? Since we do not know the author of the offending post, we do not have the means to ask whether or not their post was in all seriousness, or whether, as it seems to most of us, a means of eliciting some strong emotional reaction. What do you think?

All of a sudden the pain shot through his body. Erick screamed in pain, “Why the hell do I do this to myself?” It was all he could do not to run naked into the hallway. He knew if he did he’d be humiliated, just the other day he swore to his mother that he’d quit dropping acid and masturbating, and now? Now, he had rubbed himself raw. All of those strange thoughts, and just who the hell was this Hamlin guy? Why did he find himself falling for someone he made up in his mind? His mind was racing, somewhere deep inside of his brain the was a voice. A loud and condemning voice yelling, “Just when the hell did I start dreaming of dudes?” this wasn’t going to be a good day.
Erick got up from his bloodied bed and grabbed his little brothers hamster before he knew what he was doing he found himself holding the dripping corps of the fury rat over the toilet. He herd the voice again, “NOW GO, GO TO THE SCHOOLYARD AND KILL! KILL FOR ME!” Erick realized the acid might still be working.
No, this wasn’t going to be a good day at all.

More community service?

Professor Hamlin sent an e-mail to a few of the organizers of the English Club recently about being part of an on-campus recycling program. Is anyone interested in doing this?

The e-mail from Professor Hamlin stated,

"Mansfield Campus testing volunteer recycling program with Campus Clubs! Aluminum and plastic beverage containers represent a potentially significant recycling stream on the Mansfield Campus. Official (approved by Student Services) Campus Clubs may adopt a can & bottle recycling location. In addition to providing a valuable campus service, Clubs will retain proceeds from the sale of these recycled materials.

Plant Operations & Maintenance will provide bottle & can collection boxes and coordinate locations. Clubs must keep their recycling collection locations clean, serviced (emptied at least weekly) and transported to their off-campus recycler."

We could use the proceeds to buy more books after the book sale on the 17th, or for a different type of community service.

English NOTEs

News From the english club underground....

For anyone that missed bowling you missed a great night. We had 8 total members show up for the Godot celebration, and had some times that will not easily be forgoten. Remember to be a member you dont have to be involved with every activity. We arent keeping score. :)

It was brought to my attention that some are interested in a christmas party or christmas dinner? Does anyone else show interest? If there is interest a couple of us can get cracking on a date, as well as a location.

Also we have been offered to help run some of the recycling on the third floor. picking up boxes and such. Anyone interested in that? I would really like to see someone that has been sitting in the wings to take charge of this. We need more club participation in the back row here. How about some recruitment of some underclassman for this one? Remember being in a club and being a part of an activity, as well as organizing it and leading it is not only good for your character--but your resume!!!

And then this thursday we will be running the book sale all day. Be sure to bring in your used books and come and purchase a used one! We currently are hosting all subjects of books, from fantasy to fiction to the book of morman to the phsycology of bees ( i dunno if that one is really there) If you would like to help with the book sale just stop by durring your free period at the writting center. That is where we will be holding the sale.

Another thing to mention I think Pride and prejudice opens next week sometime. I know I will be going. I am not sure of opening times and such. But I was thinking we could all meet up somewhere---those that want to see it.

I believe that Harry potter is a big one to. I'll be there for that one. If anyone would like to come.....

"Albus Dumbledore: Dark and difficult times lie ahead, Harry. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right... and what is easy. "

hope this didnt make everyones eyes water because of the lenght.
Alright then Over and out.

Jesi.

Story Lines

Several people have suggested a thread of this sort, so here goes. We're going to write a story, line by line or paragraph by paragraph, see how many people get involved and what sort of direction it takes. So here's a prompt...

"It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness." (Paul Clifford, by Edward George Bulwer-Lytton.)

Not So Secret or Shameful

So, now that Dr. Hamlin's Secret Shames thread was a hit, maybe we can take it in a new direction. Use this thread to talk about your favorite book, author, or genre (that you're not ashamed to read), and why you love it. What literature has influenced you? What was it you read that made you want to be an English major, or an English professor?
