Religious Intolerance Profile
Event: Muslims in America
Time Period:Present
Type of Intolerance: Secular/Intra-Faith

Few if any US citizens woke up on the morning of 9/11/01 expecting a terrorist attack, but that is just what they recieved. Since the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, sceurity all over the nation has been beefed up. From airports to shopping malls, everyone has become a bit more concerned for their own personal safety since that tragic day.

The increase in national security has made america somewhat safer but has also led the government to inact new measures that infringe on some peoples rights and freedoms. Varieties of racial profiling have been enacted, targeting arabs and muslims currently residing in America (Harcourt). US citizens were frightened after the attacks and the evidence shows in a poll taken in August 2006 by a polling group at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut that said 60% of those surveyed would be in support of the singling out of 'middle-easterns' for screenings at public places (Ghazali).

Current circumstances bring to mind the conditions in America during the World War II era when many Germans, Italians, and Japanese in the US were interrogated, discriminated against, and sometimes put in camps solely based on suspicion and ethnicity. the present situation has only two sides at odds however and both views can be justified; the US government believes that it is doing its part by attempting to protect it's people against the possible danger of Islamic extremists while many Muslim-Americans believe that they are being used as a doormat for revenge. Will the issue be resolved
