The media places impossible standards on its actors, and significantly affect adult's self perception of beauty and thinness. Adults, vital in helping the media succeed with a thin-obsessed world, spend approximately 35 billion dollars on diet-related products annually (Focus). Reality television has taken advantage of adult's longing to be thin and has created shows specifically for people wanting to lose weight: the Biggest Loser, Extreme Make Over, Fat-Actress, and the Swan are a few of the prime examples of the measures people go to in order to shape their bodies to fit society's standards. Kristie Alley, spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, exemplifies the importance of weight in the media world. As she gained weight, people lost respect for her; but, as she lost the weight, people applauded her discipline and success. Parents, now, either resort to diet related "fads"--the Atkins diet--or exercise "fads" such as Pilates or Taebo. Other people fall victim to eating disorders. The quote, "I am only one stomach flu away from my goal weight," from the The Devil Wears Prada, delineates the actual pressure people put on their bodies to lose weight. Because parents have increasingly become dissatisfied with their bodies kids are at more risk of developing an eating disorder themselves (Natenchon).
