DRAFTING A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

purpose of this assignment
This writing is a bit more formal than the letter you wrote to a friend. With this writing, you will have to rework that earlier letter in order to make it fit the context of a letter to the editor.

what do do
In class, we developed a set of expectations that readers bring to a letter to the editor; if you meet those expectations, then your letter is more likely to be read carefully, respectfully, and attentively. You also drafted a statement of purpose for your letter.

In addition, I’ve asked you to read cda sections of Chapter 4 on strategies of ethos, logos, and pathos (pp. 79-85) and on arrangement (pp. 90-96). Read these pages before you write. As you read, think about how you can apply these various strategies in your own letter to help it be as effective as possible.

Keeping those expectations in mind, write a draft of a letter to the editor on the issue you’ve chosen. Your draft should be approximately 500 words, typed, and printed. Please bring 2 typed and printed copies to class on Monday, October 2.

The final copy, with all drafts, worksheets, notes, etc. is due at the beginning of class on Monday, October 9.
