LETTER TO A FRIEND

purpose of this assignment
This informal letter is to help you think in an informal way about where you stand now — and why — on the social issue you chose in class.

what do do
Type up a short — approximately 500 word — letter to a friend or relative with whom you are comfortable talking. As you write, picture that person, and write your letter directly to them, in whatever manner you would write to them. Your letter will necessarily be a little more awkward than a “real” letter would be, because you are writing it for class, but don’t worry — the point is to write while thinking about your friend or relative; don’t worry much here about “perfect” English-class writing, but focus instead on speculating about the issue and exploring what you think.

The following might help you in your writing:

  • Why does the issue you chose matter to you?
  • What kinds of questions do you have on this issue?
  • What more do you want or need to learn about this issue?
  • What different positions can people take on this issue? Why do you think different people take these positions?
  • What other kinds of issues connect up with the issue you’ve chosen? That is, are questions of free speech involved, or duty, or public health, or equal distribution of resources, or voting rights, or…?

Although letters are often handwritten, please bring 2 typed and printed copies of your letter to class on Wednesday (9/27).
