Principal scholarly and research interests include interface and interaction
theory; phenomenology of communication; cultural studies; social studies
of science, technology and innovation; gender and sexuality; theories of
the body and memory; performance and performance studies; and science fiction.
Recent publications include: The War of Desire and Technology at the
Close of the Mechanical Age, (MIT, 1995); "Will The Real Body Please
Stand Up: Boundary Stories About Virtual Cultures," in M. Benedikt,
ed.: Cyberspace: First Steps (MIT, 1991); "The Empire Strikes
Back: A Posttranssexual Manifesto," most recently in Camera Obscura
29 and in Writing On The Body: Female L'mbodiment and L'eminist Theory
(Columbia, 1996); and the forthcoming, "The Vampire's Kiss: Tales From
