This Escher drawing, like da Vinci's, is an example of an apparent dis-order: the quadrangle of steps appears to ascend clockwise, yet endlessly meets its own foot at the head of the stairs.

However a clear understanding of perspective allows the viewer to explain the illusion by identifying the lines of false perspective that fool the eye.
