updates and more

Many new things going on. Here are some of them:
1. the course schedule (link to the left) has been updated to reflect changes in STUDIO time and reading/viewing/listening assignments.
2. on the schedule there is now a link on 4.20.2004 to the Powerpoint presentation on Principles of Visual Design. You can download it for review (so you have it in color). I've also added a slide.
3. I've incorporated the revisions to the characteristics of Documentary Modes that I received from members of Group 1 and Group 2 (link on left).

stranger and stranger

Stranger with a Camera is a thought-provoking film, not least because it includes elements of several modes of representation, and alternately pulls us in and distances us from the filmmaker, Elizabeth Barret, and her subjects. I've posted a list of quotes from the film here. Use one or more of these quotes as a springboard to discuss the ethical issues circulating around the various representations of the people of Eastern Kentucky in this film.
Respond by clicking on Comments below and posting your response (you may want to write and spellcheck it in Word first). Please include your name and e-mail in the appropriate spots.

a la modes

The lists generated during the workshop on Modes of Documentary Representation have been posted under LINKS. Take a look, and e-mail me any changes/corrections you'd like to make. Tomorrow we'll consider how Nichol's modes - expository, observational, interactive, and reflexive - fit the films and web sites we've looked at so far in preparation for watching Elizabeth Barret's Stranger with a Camera. We'll also begin a discussion of McCloud's definitions and working vocabulary for comics, and connect them to our understandings of storytelling, narrative, and documentary. Consider in particular the relationships between content and form.

image+text

The Image+Test assignment results are now listed under LINKS. As you look through them, consider again how the meaning of the text is constrained by the image, and vice versa.

inspiration...

Please note the new menu category on the left, INSPIRATION. This will be a growing list of multimedia sites that use Flash nad other media in imaginative ways, pushing the boundaries of what we think words and images can do rhetorically. Today you'll find the site Poems that Go, the word-poetry of reecently deceased Ana Maria Uribe, and Seeing Red, the quirky ideastorm of Donna Leishman (look for Little "Red Riding Hood).

welcome to the weblog

The web site looks a little bare, although I hope to remedy that with a log entry or two over the weekend. Nothing you need respond to yet, unless you find yourself so moved.
On the left side you will find links to the Class Policies page and the Class Schedule page. The Class Schedule page has links (in red) to the readings for Tuesday. Some are to be read as you would an article; others are to be savored intelligently and thoughtfully. Your controlling question as you look and read might be "What is this New Media stuff, and how is it different from Old Media?"
To return to the main course page from other documents, use the Back button, or click on the eye at the top of the page.
