Gone for the Weekend

Quick entry today: I'll be attending and presenting at FSU's Conference on Literature and Film in Tallahassee this weekend. My paper is entitled: “Barn Rat Eatin’, Kung Fu Fightin’, No-Good, Stand-Up Comedian Motherf**ker: The Politics of Formal and Generic Reappropriation in Petey Wheatstraw” and it offers a reading of the 1977 Rudy Ray Moore film as a postmodern critique of the blaxploitation genre which preceeded it. Should be a bushel of good apples, if you know what I mean. Catch you on the flip-side...

Yet Another Nerd Knighted

A few weeks after the honor was bestowed upon WWW inventor Tim Berners-Lee, it looks as if the Master of All Things Micro$oft will be knighted as well. Congrats to Bill Gates, ladies and gentlemen. Honorary, of course, as Gates is American, but still... Way to go, champ!

New Life For Old Tech (The Final Chapter?)

More than likely not the final chapter. Again with the able guidance of my friend Michael, another of my aged Macs has made the jump to OSX, and so far so good. After bumping the RAM, updating 8.6 to 9.1, we were able to get Jaguar on it. Panther, however, is currently posing a problem for us (my Wall Street isn't technically a supported machine for Panther, so we've been fiddling with OWC's X-Post Facto workaround, but no luck yet). Even though Jaguar seems to be stable for the most part, and acceptably fast, I can't help but feel Panther will be a dramatic improvement. We shall see...

Up next, a briefing on the latest ePed meeting.

New Life for Old Tech (redux)

Upgraded the iMac I donated to my girlfriend Ashley's parents [see previous post] to Panther, which didn't turn out so bad once we upgraded the memory on the mofo mobo. I say "we" because my friend Michael helped greatly, so I feel compelled to thank him publicly here. Speed, while not exactly zippy, is definitely improved, and overall I'd say the system works better than it ever did with 8.1 and 32 MB of RAM (yeah, duh!). Now I'm jealous, so I'll have to do the same for my G3 PowerBook. Details to follow...

I Dub Thee, "Sir Links-a-Lot"

Wow. Guess what? No, not chicken butt. Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with the invention of the World Wide Web back in the late 80s/early 90s, has been knighted by Her Majesty. Press release can be found here.

Oh, and the semester has started anew; welcome back, what few readers I have.
