Meet the New Terminal, Same as the Old Terminal (and other tales of computing-related wonderment)

>>: It's a working theory of mine that the WWW is evolving to a state that ironically mirrors the good ol' days of computing: namely, the mainframe + dumb terminal model, only this time, the mainframe is distributed across several computers, routers, and servers. Here's the next piece of evidence towards that model, Google's web-based Writerly word processor (currently in beta, but very solid, it seems). Soon, the browser will become the OS. Don't fear the change, people.

>>: I want to make one of these. The conflation of digital aesthetics and pre-industrial technologies is much happiness.

>>: On a rather sad sidenote, I must finally say farewell to some old friends: I've had a pair of Clark's shoes for nearly 5 years now, bought on a trip to San Fran after discovering that, yes, you really do need some good shoes to walk around that hill-infested city. Best shoes ever; I've had some minor repairs done to them over the years (stitching), but they have been the most comfortable and durable shoes I have ever owned. Now the soles (souls?) are worn, and I've decided not to have them re-soled...they'll never be the same. So now I'll give them a send-off befitting the most noble Viking warrior (okay, I'm dumping them in the trash, but I will reflect somberly on the moment--it's the least I can do).

New House, New Post

>>: Check out the blog Academic Secret. Too funny...too true...too sad... Those folks are letting everyone in on the dark underworld of academia, so now you, too, can laugh at my pain.

>>: First MIT puts its courseware online for the public, and now this. Thanks a lot, Jimmy Wales; my job is quickly becoming obsolete because of your philanthropy.

>>: This Thursday, yours truly will be part of a Writing Across the Curriculum panel on the OSU Columbus campus. It's tagged "Digital Media Composing on the Cheap," and we'll talk about our various approaches and experiences using open source software (I'll talk a little about using Audacity to make audio Public Service Announcements in my Basic Writing course). Fun? Of course. More details here.

On the Move

Blog posting from this particular tube-stop on the Internets will be suspended briefly as I am in the middle of a move (which coincides with record heat indices, incidentally). I advise regular readers to feed their nostalgia addiction by sifting through the archives, and in the meantime, check out this Flickr photoset of my new digs.
